| Citation: | George Major is the pearly King of Peckham. He is 75 years old and living a tradition that he inherited from his great-great-grandfather.
The Pearly King tradition dates back to the 1870’s, when a group of vegetable sellers in London united to protect their market stalls. Eventually each working class borough London had its “king and queen”, who would look after the community and raise money for charities and the poor. The suits covered in mother of pearl buttons differentiated the kings and queens and helped draw attention to their charitable causes. Similar to crowns, they were passed down from generation to generation, carrying with them the inheritance of the title and the responsibilities of raising funds for the community.
Since the 1980’s however, the pearly way of life has been changing. Along with the gentrification of working class areas and the break up of traditional community structures, a lot of the original pearly families have moved out of London, leaving their history behind. Today there are only few original pearly families still living according to the tradition, George Major and his family being one of them.
George sees it as his duty to keep this way of life active. He and his family attend charity events, meet with old people to “put smiles on their faces” and travel throughout England to give talks about pearly history and the importance of community.
It is not an easy life – the Majors are not rich. As Tammy (George’s daugher) told me on my first visit she is “one of the poor ones. Everybody always thinks we live this glorious life. But we don’t”. None the less the feeling of being part of a greater cause gives each member of the family an special outlook on life. And as George says as I step out of his camper van on the last day of shooting – “you can now say that you have driven with royalty!” |
